I love making powerpoints. They lend themselves to visuals. It's easy to add music and video to them. Plus - you can project them onto a whiteboard. It saves a lot of time conjugating verbs on the board. Just project sentences and the students can help you fill in the gaps.
But more than this, creating a powerpoint helps me visualize the lesson. As I organize the powerpoint, it helps me organize my mind. And as a creative person whose mind thinks in concentric rings, rather than in a linear line, this organization is invaluable. Provided I have access to a computer, a projector, and a whiteboard, I can bring that linear organization with me to class.
Here is part of a powerpoint that I created for an esl portion of a cosmetology class. I've also included the handouts in word and pdf format to go with it - feel free to use and adapt!
