I really think so much meaning stems from the core schemas. So far we have covered the UP-DOWN spatial axis, and the PATH schema for UP. Let's do a few more:
The CONTAINER Schema:
If the container is opaque, a "rising up" means that the trajector has become visible. The "completion" sense of the particle "up" adds a kind of suddenness or unexpectedness to the verb, rather like a rabbit popping out of a magician's hat.
Phrasal verbs that make use of this schema include show up (make an appearance at a social or professional gathering), turn up (be found, discovered or noticed; arrive or make an appearance), make up (create out of one's own mind; compensate for something lacking, lost, or missed), come up with (think of or produce); and come up (occur unexpectedly)
